Belfast Harbour is urging tech-savvy schoolchildren to put their screen skills to the test by taking part in a massive online competition.

Aimed at encouraging a deeper understanding of its economic role and the impact it has on our everyday lives, the harbour is urging all 10-12 year old pupils to take a photograph or upload a 30-second video which features an interesting item or a product of their choice that could be linked back to Belfast Harbour.

Belfast Harbour handles 70 per cent of all seaborne trade and 20 per cent of maritime trade in Ireland. In 2015 alone, Belfast Harbour handled 23 million tonnes of cargo.

The pupil with the best idea and who demonstrates the most creativity will win a specially-chartered boat trip around the harbour for their whole class, while one chosen from each county in Northern Ireland will receive a special #MyHarbour pack for themselves and their classmates.

"We're looking for talented young photographers and film makers to make their entries stand out from the crowd by using their best ideas to demonstrate how the harbour makes a big impact on their own daily lives," said Belfast Harbour's communications and corporate responsibility manager, Jenni Barkley.

"From the clothes we wear, the food we eat or the games we play, the harbour packs a big punch in everyone's life and we look forward to firing the imaginations of thousands of tech-savvy pupils aged 10 to 12 years. We can't wait to see the entries."

To help all children understand more about the type of goods it receives every day, Belfast Harbour has created an informative #MyHarbour factsheet which will be distributed free to schools across Northern Ireland. It will also be available online.

The #MyHarbour competition is underway and runs until Friday June 10. For more information, visit www.belfast-harbour.co.uk/myharbourcompetition.
