Former Aontú deputy leader Denise Mullen has lost her council seat in Mid Ulster in the local government election.

A well-known legacy campaigner, Ms Mullen left the SDLP to join Peadar Tóibín’s pro-life party in 2019.

First elected to Mid-Ulster council in 2014, she polled just 146 first preference votes and was eliminated at the third stage.

Ms Mullen, who also stood in last year’s assembly elections, has been a strong advocate for relatives of people killed during the Troubles.

Her father, SDLP activist Denis Mullen (35), was shot dead by members of the UVF at his home near Moy, Co Tyrone in September 1975.

The killing was carried out by the Glenanne Gang, which was made up of members of the RUC, UDR and UVF.

It is believed to have been responsible for the murders of up to 120 people mainly across Armagh and Down in the 1970s.

Former loyalist Garfield Beattie served 16 years in jail for three sectarian murders, including that of Mr Mullen.

In December 2021 he received a further 17-month term after being found guilty of attempting to intimidate Ms Mullen and has since been released.

He had sent her a letter signed by the East Tyrone UVF after she issued a civil claim for damages over her father's murder.
