THE brother of the late former SDLP leader John Hume has been described as someone "committed to the education of our young people" following his death.
Patrick Hume, known as Paddy or Patsy in Derry, died on Sunday morning at the age of 82.
A former head of governors at St Cecilia’s College, Mr Hume won the National Governor of the Year gong at the 2006 National Teaching Awards in London.
The award was bestowed to mark his 14 years of service as a governor at the school.
Along with his role with the school, Mr Hume, a father-of-six, worked as a nurse manager in several north west nursing homes during his career.
His daughter, Brenda Stevenson, previously served as an SDLP councillor in Derry, and was Mayor of the city in 2014 before the council merged to become the Derry and Strabane District Council a year later.
Paying tribute to Mr Hume, SDLP leader and Foyle MP Colum Eastwood said in a social media post he was "very sorry to learn of Patsy Hume’s passing".
"Patsy stood with his brother John through hard times during the Troubles, was committed to the education of our young people and a passionate community worker."
He added: "Thinking of all of Patsy’s family at this time. May he rest in peace."
Foyle SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan said Mr Hume was a "dedicated educationalist", and told the Irish News: "Paddy was a great family man and was well-known across Derry in his own right. He was held in high regard by so many, and he sadly lost his wife Brigid last year. My thoughts are with his family at this time."
A funeral for Mr Hume will take place on Wednesday at St Columba’s Church in Longtower, ollowed by burial at Derry City Cemetery.
