A NUMBER of homes have been evacuated following the discovery of a suspicious object in Portrush.

The security alert remains ongoing in the Glentaisie Park area of the town.

A PSNI spokesperson said homes in the area were evacuated as an examination of the object got underway.

Coleraine Leisure Centre has been opened to accommodate those evacuated in the area.

"Motorists and pedestrians are advised that cordons are currently in place and are asked to avoid the area at present," the spokesperson added.

"A further update will be provided in due course."

East Derry Sinn Féin MLA Caoimhe Archibald said the alert had caused disruption "particularly for families who have had to leave their homes on a cold night".

She added: "A police operation continues in the area and I would ask people to co-operate with them until this alert has been cleared.

"Anyone with information should bring it to the police."
