POLICE investigating activity linked to the New IRA have carried out searches in Strabane.

Detectives from the PSNI's Terrorism Investigation Unit joined uniformed officers for the searches in the town's Evish Road area.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "The search is part of an ongoing investigation into the activities of the new IRA and is a continued demonstration of our commitment to reduce the threat posed by violent dissident republicans."

They added: "Anyone with information in relation to the New IRA is urged to contact police on 101."

The New IRA group claimed responsibility for a bomb attack in the Co Tyrone town in November, in which two police officers escaped injury when a device detonated beside their vehicle.
