POLICE are investigating a graffiti attack on Ulster Rugby criticising the club’s main sponsor Kingspan.

The Irish insulation firm’s products were used in Grenfell Tower in London where 72 people died in a fire in 2017.

Outside the stadium gates in east Belfast, the words “Grenfell”, “No Justice” and “No Peace” had been painted over on Monday.

A club spokesperson said: “Ulster Rugby is in contact with the PSNI following criminal damage to Kingspan Stadium overnight. Anyone with information, particularly householders in the area who may have CCTV or other footage which may assist, are urged to contact Strandtown PSNI on 101, quoting reference number 539 of January 2.

“The club would like to thank local residents for their ongoing help and support. No further comment will be made while the investigation is ongoing.”

In 2021, the Mercedes Formula One team cut ties with Kingspan claiming it was “not appropriate” to continue the partnership.

The former Conservative Minister Michael Gove also wrote to Ulster Rugby to ask them to end their relationship with the firm.

Kingspan has previously stated that its K15 insulation product accounted for only 5 per cent of the insulation used at the tower block, and was used without its recommendation.

It also noted the exterior cladding, which it had not manufactured, was the “principal reason” for the rapid spread of the fire.
