A MAN has been left in a critical condition after being stabbed in east Belfast.

The incident happened shortly before 6.40pm on Monday in the Cregagh Road area.

A PSNI spokesperson said they received a report that a man "had been stabbed a number of times".

"The victim was taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment of his injuries and he is in a critical condition," the spokesperson said

"Our investigation is at an early stage and detectives are appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time, who may have captured mobile or dashcam footage to contact us on 101 quoting reference number 1653 05/12/22."

SDLP councillor Séamas de Faoite said the incident has left people in the area "shocked and afraid".

"This is a busy part of our community, particularly at this time of year when people are out socialising and shopping," he said.

"I would appeal for anyone with information to come forward to police as soon as possible."
