The Church of Ireland bishop of Derry and Raphoe, Ken Good has announced he is to retire after more than 16 years in the post.

Bishop Good (66) told his diocesan council that he intends stepping down in May next year following a visit to the city by the Church of Ireland’s 600-strong governing body, the General Synod.

The Derry church leader said he felt "blessed" to have been called to serve in such a great diocese as Derry and Raphoe.

"I have met so many memorable people and enjoyed so many wonderful experiences that it will be a wrench to retire. It has been a joy for Mary and me to live and work in such a vibrant community," he said.
