THE Department of Education is to review school accommodation constructed by a Co Tyrone-based firm.

It comes after the Republic's department said it was to carry out "urgent structural assessments" at 30 schools.

The schools were all built by Western Building Systems in the past 10 years. They were all "rapid-build" modular schools, constructed to meet a shortage at the time.

The move followed the discovery of "significant structural issues" at Ardgillan Community College in Balbriggan, Co Dublin.

Engineers carrying out fire remediation work last week discovered that ties that fix the exterior walls to interior walls were inadequate. A decision was taken to close an 18-classroom section of the school - constructed in 2009 - with immediate effect.

Western Building Systems, which is based in Coalisland, has also built schools in the north in recent years.

The north's departmental said, in light of the recent press reports in the Republic, it was "currently reviewing buildings supplied by Western Building Systems".

"The vast majority of buildings supplied by Western in NI schools are single storey, modular classrooms rather than the larger, multi-storey wings supplied via the so-called ‘rapid build’ construction system used in ROI," a spokeswoman said.

"All NI schools are constructed to NI Building Regulation standards and are signed off by council building control teams."
