CHILDREN at a Co Antrim primary school have been nailing their colours to the mast ahead of this weekend’s Antrim senior football final.

Moneynick Primary School has been buzzing ahead of the Loughshore showdown between Erin’s Own Cargin and Creggan Kickhams on Sunday.

The small country school, which sits on the main Derry to Belfast road near Toome, also straddles the boundary between the two famous clubs.

While Cargin are no strangers to Antrim county deciders, their near neighbours haven’t featured in the final since 1977.

Earlier this week a video of children at the school cheering their clubs on ahead of the big game proved to be a hit on Facebook.

School principal Emer Hughes said loyalties in the school are split.

“Between the two clubs the school is pretty much divided,” she said.

“We have loads of families that are split, brothers playing for one club and a sister for another.

“We have members of staff who belong to each club.

“There was a lot of teasing and we thought the best thing to do would be make it fun.”

While the school head steers a diplomatic course by not declaring her allegiance, the same can’t be said for fellow teacher Orla Mallon.

“I am pure Creggan,” she said.

“The wee ones have been electric all week.”

She also revealed that the school has signed up for the GAA 5 Star programme and hopes to become a GAA centre of excellence.
