VETERAN political cartoonist and critic Ian Knox has been made an honorary member of the Royal Society of Ulster Architects (RSUA).

The society last night made the award in recognition of the Irish News cartoonist's extensive contribution to public discourse in Northern Ireland about the natural and built environment.

Mr Knox, who is a trained architect, accepted the honour at an event at the Carlisle Memorial Church in north Belfast last night. The large 19th century former church was saved from dereliction but remains in an unfinished state.

The awards night follows an exhibition of his work this summer at RSUA entitled Critical Crass, which aimed to stimulate debate about public policy, design quality, and the necessity of good architecture.

Of the exhibition, Mr Knox said he wanted to demonstrate the importance of public policy and design quality in shaping modern Ireland.

He added that he was passionate about what he described as the people of Ireland's "visual bypass" when it came to the built space.

"It is very pleasant to have been awarded. It is a great honour," Mr Knox said.
