RYANAIR has won an apology from the Irish Examiner over claims in a newspaper article in May 2015 that its contracts were a safety threat.

Libel lawyer Paul Tweed said in a statement made in open court, The Irish Examiner acknowledged "Ryanair's industry leading safety record and the Irish Aviation Authority’s independent confirmation that Ryanair "fully complies with all European and international regulations in all of its operations", and the confirmation that Ryanair's safety standards are "on a par with the safest airlines in Europe".

The paper - which ran a front page story and article inside - agreed to make a donation to charity, the Jack and Jill Children's Foundation.

Mr Tweed meanwhile has won an apology and retraction for the Duchess of York from Closer Magazine over claims she was planning to make money by penning a tell-all book about the British royal family.

The victory comes in the days after she returned to the public stage at the wedding of her younger daughter Princess Eugenie in Windsor, attended by senior British royals.

"While my client is very satisfied with this comprehensive retraction and apology from the publishers of Closer Magazine, she also remains determined to ascertain the source of these and other false allegations, which had been the subject of a similar apology by the National Enquirer last year," Mr Tweed said.
