MILLIONAIRE businessman JP McManus has donated €100,000 to every Gaelic county board in Ireland to be divided equally among their clubs.
The gesture, which amounts to a windfall of €3.2m (£2.8m), was made on the back of Limerick’s All-Ireland Hurling Championship win.
McManus, a Limerick native, is the main sponsor of the county team.
Better known for his involvement in horse racing he is also the sponsor of the JP McManus Pro-Am golf tournament to be played at Adare Manor in Limerick in July 2020.
A letter to each county board has said the donation intention is for the continued development of Gaelic Games in the country.
A spokesperson for the GAA described it as "unprecedented" and an "incredible gesture".
MEP and former GAA President, Seán Kelly, also welcomed the donation saying it was "a gesture of extraordinary generosity from JP, who has always been a huge supporter of our games".
"As former GAA President, and indeed County Chairperson, I know how beneficial this will be to county boards around the country.
"This additional funding will help counties to invest in the development of the games, improve their facilities, and bring their teams to the next levels", he added.
