A DUP councillor has been suspended from the party while facing a charge of sexual assault.

It is understood Ian Stevenson, a councillor on Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, will appear in court next month.

The 48-year-old, who is former Mayor of Ballymoney, is a member of both the Environmental Services Committee and the Leisure and Development Committee.

Mr Stevenson has served the area for more than 20 years.

A DUP Spokesman said: "Councillor Stevenson's membership has been suspended pending the outcome of a court case".
