A MAN has been assaulted in his home in north Belfast by an intruder armed with a hammer.

The man was at in a house at Upper Meadow Street at around 10pm on Thursday when a number of masked men, one of whom was armed with a hammer, forced their way into the property and assaulted him.

The gang then fled the scene.

Police said the victim was taken to hospital "where he remains receiving treatment for injuries which are not believed to be life threatening".

Police have appealed for information about the incident.
