A man was remanded in custody today accused of having explosives in Belfast.

James Sean William Edwards appeared before the city's Magistrates Court in connection with a suspected pipe bomb incident at North Queen Street on Sunday.

The 27-year-old, of Ashfield Drive in Donaghadee, Co Down faces charges of making and possessing an explosive device with intent to endanger life.

Edwards spoke only to confirm that he understood the alleged offences.

A police officer confirmed she could connect him to the charges but disclosed no further details about the case.

Defence counsel Sean Mullan did not put any questions to her.

Although Edwards did not apply for bail, his barrister confirmed: "The allegations are denied."

District Judge Fiona Bagnall remanded the accused in custody to appear again by video-link in four weeks time.

Edwards nodded and waved at friends in the public gallery as he was led from the dock.
