SDLP leader Colum Eastwood has written to Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn urging him to back remaining within the European customs union single market after Brexit.

Mr Eastwood branded the Conservative government's position on Brexit a "directionless drift" and a "cause of deep worry and concern".

"In that context, I would genuinely urge you to provide strong political contrast to the cabinet chaos by adopting a clear Labour position of continued and full access to the European single market and customs union," he wrote.

The Foyle MLA called on Mr Corbyn to protect the legacy of the Good Friday Agreement, warning that Brexit could potentially "dismantle the architecture of our peace process".

"As the current leader of the Labour, I am urging you to protect that legacy rather than allowing a hard Brexit to destroy it," he said.
