A DELIVERY driver's car was doused in petrol and set alight in an attack police are treating as attempted murder.

The man in his forties was delivering food to an address in Fairfield Place, Newtownards, Co Down, when he was targeted at around 10.45pm on Tuesday.

He managed to escape uninjured but his car, a red Ford Fiesta, was badly damaged.

A police spokesman said two men were involved in the attack. They were later seen running down an alley close to Fairfield Place.

He appealed to anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area between 10.30pm and 11pm on Tuesday to contact detectives.

Alliance Strangford MLA Kellie Armstrong said she was shocked by the attack.

"I am thankful the man was able to escape unharmed," she said.

"There is absolutely no justification for these actions and as the pair may attempt this again, it is crucial they are apprehended as soon as possible.

"I urge anyone with information on this incident to contact police immediately and help remove these sick individuals from our streets."
