A CO Down woman has been recognised for her work in helping to protect the environment.

Nicola Fitzsimons from Downpatrick was named a "game changer" in her community after she was selected as one of only three people from Europe to make a prestigious environment education list.

The awards programme, organised by the North American Association for Environmental Education, shines a spotlight on the incredible efforts of young people around the world who use their skills and passion to increase environmental practices in their homes, schools and communities.

Ms Fitzsimons, a community development officer at Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful, said she was delighted to be selected for the 'Environmental Education 30 under-30 hot list' alongside "other young people from around the world who are passionate about tackling environmental issues in their respective countries".
