A DOCUMENTARY telling the story of a Belfast soldier who fought in World War II is to be screened at a Belfast cinema to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.

'From Belfast to Dachau' tells the story of Teddy Dixon, one of the first servicemen to enter the Dachau concentration camp in Germany in 1945.

What makes the story even more remarkable is that, during the Second World War, Teddy Dixon was fighting with the American Army. He was drafted in 1944 as a result of being born in New York in 1920 although his family returned to Belfast five years later.

Directed by producer and director Dermot Lavery, the documentary accompanies Mr Dixon, who is now 98, as he is reunited with his fellow servicemen and returns to Dachau to find peace of mind. But it reveals how he is still haunted by the scenes he witnessed.

The production will be screened at the Movie House Dublin Road on January 24.

Michael McAdam from Movie House said: "It’s important to remember the past and we are proud to hold this event telling Teddy Dixon’s story.

"We hope that people come along to see this documentary, which tells a story that is so relevant today."

A short film, 'A Stranger Smiled at Me', which tells the story of Walter Kammerling’s journey fleeing Nazi-occupied Austriato a farm near Millisle in Co Down, will also be screened.

After both films have concluded, a discussion will be held with Mr Dixon and film-maker Mr Lavery. Please contact Movie House Dublin Road for free tickets.
