A SHARED education project in north Belfast has won a global peace building prize.

Buddy Up, which is coordinated by Community Relations in Schools, (Cris), took third place at the Intercultural Innovation Awards, at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

The awards recognise grassroots, peace building initiatives that promote intercultural dialogue and understanding, thereby contributing to peace, cultural diversity and more inclusive societies.

Buddy Up runs as a collaborative project between CRIS, Edenderry Nursery School and Holy Cross Nursery School in north Belfast. It engages children, parents and families to build meaningful relationships and friendships while learning and achieving together.

Cris director Lisa Dietrich said schools were the ideal meeting places to grow a community of togetherness and compassion.

"Our work with Holy Cross Nursery School, in Ardoyne and Edenderry Nursery School, in the Shankill is already creating the conditions for the removal of barriers," she said.
