Paramiltary shooting victim suffered injuries which could "potentially be life changing"

A 29-year-old man shot in both legs in a paramilitary-style shooting in west Belfast has suffered "potentially be life changing" injuries.

The man was discovered with gunshot wounds to both his legs in an alleyway in the Iris Court area at around 8.40pm on Wednesday and taken to hospital for treatment.

Chief Inspector Kellie McMillan, who said the attack on the man "could have a significant impact on the rest of his life", said violent crime "must stop".

"Not only is there an impact on the victim and their family, but also on the community who are left in fear of such violence taking place on their doorstep," she said.

"So I am appealing for the community to work with us and give us the information we need to put those criminals responsible before the courts to face justice and make west Belfast a safer place".

SDLP vice chair Gerard McDonald condemned the attack "in the strongest possible terms".

"The only way we can stop these people standing on the neck of our community is if people bring information forward to the police".
