AN ACTRESS walking 260 miles across Ireland in aid of a holiday resort for children with special needs has concluded her fundraising journey in Belfast.

Fiona O'Carroll, who is best known for playing Maria in the hit TV series Mrs Brown's Boys, began the walk in Cork on August 11.

After walking around 20 miles each day, she crossed the finish line at the Europa Hotel in Belfast today.

Ms O'Carroll, who is the daughter of fellow Mrs Brown's Boys star Brendan O'Carroll, undertook the mammoth journey in aid of the charity Billy's World.

Billy's World aims to raise €1.8 million to build a sensory holiday facility for children with special needs at The Heritage hotel in Killenard, Co Laois.

Planning permission has already been granted for the site and a fundraising drive is under way.

Ms O'Carroll donated €1 for every beep received on the route, in addition to bucket collecting and donations.

Although Ms O'Carroll was the only person walking every stage, she was accompanied by around 200 people at different stops, including co-stars from Mrs Brown's Boys.

Fundraising pages are set to close on Friday, and it is estimated that up to €40,000 has been collected so far.

The charity was set up by Irish couple Tony and Cora Byrne, whose son Billy was diagnosed with Pallister Killian Syndrome, a rare developmental disorder, when he was 13-months-old in 2008.

One of only three children in Ireland with the condition, Billy passed away in March 2013, just one week before his sixth birthday.
