A MAN was arrested yesterday by police investigating the murder of a loyalist shot dead in a supermarket car park in front of his three-year-old son. He was released pending a report to the Public Prosecution Service.

Colin Horner (35) was gunned down on Sunday May 28 outside Sainsbury's supermarket in Bangor, Co Down.

Police said a 46-year-old man was detained in the Belfast area yesterday morning in connection with the shooting.

Two men have already been charged in the connection with Mr Horner's death.

It is believed the killing was part of an ongoing feud among loyalist paramilitaries that in March led to the murder in Carrickfergus of ex-UDA chief George Gilmore.

The 44-year-old was shot several times in broad daylight as he sat in his car at Pinewood Avenue in the town.

He had been returning with others from attending court in support of friends accused of trying to kill a pub doorman at the Royal Oak bar in the town two days earlier.

In July last year more than 100 men, some wearing masks, marched on the leading loyalist's Carrickfergus home in a bid to expel him from the area.

The cost of policing the loyalist feud in Carrickfergus – which has forced dozens to flee their homes – has topped more than £2 million.

The trouble has resulted in a heightened police presence in the area, with regular patrols taking place to try and keep the peace.

Several members of a small UDA faction loyal to Mr Gilmore have since had to relocate outside the area following threats from opposing members.
