A YOUNG minke whale has been spotted in Belfast Harbour.

The whale was seen yesterday morning close to Harland and Wolff.

Minke are the most commonly-found whales in Irish waters and have previously been seen in Belfast Lough.

However, it is rare that they swim so far up the Lough.

The mammals can weight up to ten tonnes and grow to just under ten metres.

The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs said its officials will keep an eye on the whale's welfare.

A spokesman said: "Our Marine and Fisheries team will continue to monitor the whale's behaviour in conjunction with colleagues from Belfast Harbour Commissioners".

"The animal is currently in a well-regulated area within Belfast Harbour where there is no risk of disturbance," he said.

"The whale is not in an area that is easily viewable by the public, however, as a marine-protected species, people are advised to enjoy any views they are fortunate to have of this remarkable animal but not to approach or do anything to disturb it."
