A SERIES of arson attacks in Larne have been linked to ongoing tensions between rival loyalist factions in the town.

Sinn Féin's Oliver McMullan has called for extra police patrols in the area as a result of the escalation in attacks.

In the latest incident a car was set on fire in the Victoria Road area of the town.

Police were called after 10pm on Sunday night and say they are investigating a motive behind the arson.

Mr McMullan, an MLA for East Antrim, said: "Thankfully no one was injured in these incidents but if such attacks continue it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured or worse.

"This is the latest in a series of arson attacks against vehicles and property in the Larne area which were connected to feuding within criminal loyalist gangs.

"I have spoken to the PSNI and called for additional police patrols in the area to help tackle the ongoing problem of loyalist paramilitarism in Larne," he added.

Police meanwhile have appealed to anyone with information to contact them.
