A STORMONT department have been criticised after a picture of British soldiers at the annual Trooping the Colour parade was posted on its official Twitter account.

The image of soldiers marching along a Union flag-bedecked Mall to mark Queen Elizabeth's birthday was posted on Saturday and later retweeted before being deleted.

A message accompanying the tweet on the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) account read “This is the United Kingdom. No-one does it better. #TroopingtheColour”.

Former SDLP deputy leader Dolores Kelly last night called for greater “oversight and responsibility”.

“It seems people have been confused about their personal accounts and the department accounts,” she said.

“If you were in some other organisation you would be disciplined for using official accounts to put forward personal views.”

Mrs Kelly believes that some Stormont departments have let standards slip in the absence of the executive and an assembly.

A spokesman for DAERA said: “It is DAERA’s policy to issue only material directly relevant to the department through its social media channels.

“It is possible this was retweeted in error.

“However, we have reviewed our security measures as a precaution.”

The spokesman declined to respond when asked what department within DAERA handles its Twitter account.
