THE rape of a woman in a popular north Belfast park has been branded "horrific".

The woman was attacked in the Waterworks on Cavehill Road at around 8.30pm on Wednesday.

The area was sealed off and police launched an investigation.

Police arrested a man on Friday evening.

Detectives have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.

SDLP MLA Nichola Mallon said the community was in "shock following this horrific attack".

"This is a park well used by local people of all ages, more so as the brighter nights come in," she said.

"I would appeal to anyone with any information relating to this attack, no matter how insignificant they think it might be, to please bring it to the police so that those behind it are caught and face justice and we can protect the safety of people using our park".

Chief Inspector Stephen McCauley said officers had "increased focused patrols in the area" following complaints of antisocial behaviour in the park.

He added that police were working with community representatives and other agencies to address the issue.

"I am also asking parents to make sure they know where their children and young people are and what they are doing," he said.
