REPUBLIC of Ireland footballer James McClean and The Undertones are on a shortlist of famous Derry people who could find their faces featuring on a city bus.

The shortlist was drawn up by Translink for its “Foyle Legends” campaign which will lead to two famous faces being featured and celebrated on a bus operating on Derry's city centre route.

The living legends shortlist includes musician Phil Coulter, actress Roma Downey, singer Neil Hannon, footballer James McClean, the Republic's soccer manager Martin O’Neill and punk band The Undertones.

Members of the public can now vote for their favourites to feature on a special double decker bus wrap. Voting, at www.translink.co.uk/foylelegends/, will continue until April 23 with the “Bus of Legends” to be unveiled on June 5.

Ulster University professor of social policy Deirdre Heenan, who chaired the shortlisting panel said the selection process had been difficult but they had drawn up a lost of names who were "all fabulous ambassadors for the city."

Translink chief executive, Chris Conway said the high number of nominations showed the “wealth and talent” which has come from Derry.
