A BELFAST man wanted for allegedly kidnapping a woman appeared in court today following his extradition from the Republic.

Jonathan Turley (36) was also being sought in connection with charges of assault, dangerous driving, having a claw hammer and CS gas spray.

The alleged offences were committed at locations in Belfast and Co Antrim in 2014.

Turley, of Clandeboye Drive in the city, was detained under a European Arrest Warrant.

He was handed over to police in Newry and brought to Belfast Magistrates' Court following a year-long extradition process.

As Turley entered the dock, a PSNI officer said a total of nine warrants were executed after he was transferred from the Republic.

Police have also been seeking him in connection with alleged criminal damage to a north Belfast bakery and threats to damage a house.

Defence solicitor Chris McCann confirmed he was not applying for bail.

But he told the judge the defendant wanted to correct what he perceived to be inaccurate media coverage of a previous case.

"Mr Turley wanted me to outline to the court that he was arrested for assault on a male in Cork," the lawyer said.

"It was misreported that he had assaulted a female."

At that point there was an outburst from his client.

"All the fake news reporters... I was arrested for a fight in a bar," he shouted out.

Turley was remanded into custody to appear again next week for a preliminary enquiry hearing.
