A FOUNDING member of the Council for Catholic Maintained Schools, Monsignor Colm McCaughan, has died.

Mgr McCaughan died in hospital on Wednesday. He was in his late eighties.

A former chancellor of the Down and Connor diocese, he was educated at St Malachy’s College, Belfast, and Queen's University.

He later attended St Patrick’s College, Maynooth, and was ordained to the priesthood in 1954.

Mgr McCaughan was secretary to the Diocesan Education Committee from 1968 to 1987. In 1987 he became interim director of the new Council for Catholic Maintained Schools.

He was appointed as chancellor of the Down and Connor diocese in August 1993 - a post he held until his retirement in September 2009.

Requiem Mass is to be celebrated at noon today in the Church of St Patrick & St Brigid in Ballycastle, Co Antrim, followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.
