A DRAMA based on the true-life story of double murders Colin Howell and Hazel Stewart has picked up a gong at the Royal Television Society NI Programme Awards.

The Secret, a four-part series based on the murder pact between the killer dentist Howell, played by James Nesbitt, and nursery teacher Stewart, was created by Hat Trick Productions and picked up the award for best drama.

The awards, which were held at The MAC, Belfast on Thursday and hosted by broadcaster Adrian Chiles, celebrate the best in local television production and creative talent.

Other award winners were Patrick Kielty's Mulholland Drive by Green Inc Film and Television as well as the series The Commute by Waddell Media.

Coleraine-born actress Bronagh Waugh, who starred on The Fall and Hollyoaks, was a guest presenter for the International Production award.
