THE Housing Executive gave £2,000 towards a new musical set during the Easter Rising.

Blood Upon the Rose tells the tragic love story of Grace Gifford and Joseph Plunkett set against the backdrop of the 1916 Rising in Dublin.

Written and directed by Gerry Cunningham, the new musical is touring theatre venues across the north.

Adverts for the production include branding for the Executive Office, Mid Ulster District Council and the Housing Executive.

The Housing Executive said it funds a wide range of initiatives including sports, arts and drama.

"Funding was provided to the theatre group, as they work closely with young people from Housing Executive estates," a spokesman said.

"This is an excellent shared history project based on a cross-community theme set against the backdrop of historical events, which has helped engage both sides of the local community in their shared history."

The Executive Office said it gave £3.1m to councils in 2015/16 through the District Council Good Relations Programme, but decisions on funding specific projects were made by councils.

Mid Ulster council said £8,000 was offered through its Decade of Anniversaries programme.
