TRANSLINK is to shut its Sprucefield 'park and ride' car park facility on weekend evenings because of "anti-social behaviour".

Starting from yesterday, the free car park will be closed on Fridays and weekends between 8pm and 6am.

Translink said the decision follows "recent incidents of anti-social behaviour including littering and trespass".

A spokeswoman said it would not affect passengers as no services stop at the park and ride during the periods of closure.

Notices on buses had suggested the facility would not be available at all during weekends, but Translink said these notices are incorrect and are "in the process of being changed".

The park and ride first opened a decade ago to cut traffic on the M1 by encouraging commuters to take the bus into Belfast.

Concerns have been raised in the past over Union flags placed on lampposts at the car park.

They were first erected following protests over restrictions on the flying of the Union flag at Belfast City Hall in December 2012.

In February the PSNI and roads department indicated they would not be intervening to remove the flags.

Last year Translink was forced to close its dedicated slipway into Belfast's Europa bus station on weekend evenings because of youths vandalising vehicles.

The closure of the Westlink slipway forced buses to instead enter and leave Europa bus station via Glengall Street.
