FORMER Derry City player Kevin McHugh has announced his retirement from football after severing his finger in a freak accident at a coaching session.

Mr McHugh (36), who was captain of Finn Harps football club, drove himself to Letterkenny university hospital last week despite severing his finger when his wedding ring caught on a fence.

The Donegal man also revealed yesterday that he had to call a fellow coach while on his way to hospital as he forgot to bring his severed finger with him.

He was subsequently rushed to Galway hospital, however, attempts to re-attach the limb failed and his finger could not be saved.

Mr McHugh, who won an FAI Cup medal and three League Cups with Derry City, announced his retirement from football on the Finn Harps’ club website.

“Obviously a disaster for me personally with the recent accident and ultimately finishing my career at this level. It’s not how I imagined leaving the club, but that’s life in general isn’t it. No-one knows what’s around the corner but you just have to get on with it. Between managing, coaching and work, family I’ll be kept pretty busy anyways,” he said.

Finn Harps FC spokesman said: “Harps’ players, management and volunteers are looking forward to recognising Kevin’s huge contribution to the club.”
