REPUBLIC of Ireland footballer James McClean celebrated the match of his life yesterday when he married long-time partner Erin Connor in Derry.

The West Bromwich Albion star was joined by international colleagues Shane Duffy of Blackburn Rovers and Seamus Coleman of Everton at St Columb’s Church in the city’s Waterside.

From the Creggan area of Derry, McClean (27) has courted controversy in England for his refusal to wear a poppy for Remembrance Sunday but is a hugely popular figure in his native city.

Last year he won praise within the GAA world when he sponsored a kit for his former club.

Before signing with Derry City FC, he was an accomplished Gaelic footballer with Creggan-based Sean Dolans GAC.

McClean met Erin (23) who is from Lettershandoney near Claudy, at a Derry night club six years ago. The couple became engaged in 2012.

The newly-weds were joined at yesterday’s rain-hit celebrations by their two children, Allie Mae (2) and eight-month-old James.

The groom was attended by former Derry City goalkeeper Eugene Ferry as best man, while the bride had five bridesmaids, with five groomsmen completing the bridal party.

The ceremony was conducted by Waterside priest Fr Chris Ferguson, who joked with the couple about his own passion for Liverpool FC.

The couple later held their wedding reception at the Drenagh country estate near Limavady.

However, any plans for a honeymoon may have to be put on hold.

As a key member of Martin O’Neill’s Republic of Ireland squad, McClean is expected to line out with the side in a challenge game against Holland at the Aviva Stadium next Friday.

The game is in preparation for Ireland’s European Championships opener against Sweden on June 13.
