A documentary film is being made about the experiences of a group of ex internees known as the Hooded Men.

The 14 Catholic men say they were tortured by security force members after the introduction of internment in 1971.

Their treatment included being forced to listen to loud static noise and being deprived of sleep, food and water, as well as having to stand in stress positions and being beaten if they fell.

Some of the men were also thrown from helicopters they were told were told were at high altitude despite being just feet from the ground.

In 1978 the European Court of Human Rights held that the British had carried out inhuman and degrading treatment - but fell short of making a finding of torture.

In 2014 the Irish government decided to ask the court to revise that judgment.

Now Dublin based filmmakers are producing a documentary about the men’s lives and campaign for justice.

Some surviving members of the group will come together in Lurgan, Co Armagh, tonight for an event to remember former ‘hooded man’ Gerry McKerr, who died almost a year ago.

They will recount their experiences at the event while their solicitor Darragh Mackin and case co-ordinator Jim McIlmurray will give an overview of the case.

The Hooded Men event will take place in the Clan na Gael GAA club at Francis Street in Lurgan at 8pm.
