A CO Down man has been killed after being struck by two cars just hours after landing on the Canary Islands on holiday.

Jim Campbell (40), also known as 'Soupy', who was from Downpatrick, died shortly before midnight on Wednesday in Fuerteventura.

It is understood he was struck as he walked to his accommodation from the airport, having stopped in a bar with friends after arriving on the island hours earlier.

It has been reported that he was walking alone and with his back to the traffic when he was hit by the first car, which emerged from a bend.

The driver of that car stopped his vehicle and called the emergency services, but a second car then ran over the Downpatrick man.

The second vehicle did not stop and was stopped by police in the capital Puerto del Rosario.

Spanish police indicated that the 50-year-old driver of the second car had tested positive for drugs.

A report in the Islands Connections newspaper, which covers the Canary Islands, said that the driver "gave himself up to police at around 2am and has since tested positive for drugs."

The Foreign Office in London is assisting the family, while Colin Bell, from the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust, said that everything had been "set in motion" to bring Mr Campbell's body back to Ireland.

Mr Campbell's brother, Joe, wrote on Facebook: "RIP big bro love you always."

Another friend added: "So sorry Joe for the loss of Jim,he was one of the good guys in this life, and a very generous person, and a very good friend to myself and many, many others. He will be sorely and sadly missed, may he rest in peace."

South Down MP Margaret Ritchie tweeted: "Deepest sympathies to Jim's family."
