A 25 year-old man has been remanded into custody charged with the murder of a Latvian woman in Portavogie at the weekend.

Standing in the dock of Downpatrick Magistrates Court, Viktors Arustamous confirmed he understood the single charge against him while a police officer told the court he believed he could connect the defendant to the allegations.

Arustamous, whose address was given as no fixed abode in Newtownards, is charged with murdering 52 year-old Lija Aroustamova on a date between December 11 and December 12 this year.

Her body was discovered in a house on Main Street in the fishing town at the weekend.

No bail application was lodged so District Judge Greg McCourt remanded Arustamous into custody to appear again at Newtownards Magistrates Court on 8 January via videolink.
