THE stars of Games of Thrones descended on the Co Antrim village of Carnlough yesterday to film new scenes for the Season 6 of the hit fantasty drama.

Fans watched from a distance as 18-year-old Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark, was filmed swimming in Carnlough Harbour and walking up the steps.

Ms Williams' character was feared to have gone blind at the end of Season 5, although yesterday's scenes did not provide any clues as to the storyline for the hotly awaited new season drama.

The British actress was seen grimacing from the cold water with a scuba diver and apparent body double nearby.

Since 2011 Arya Stark has featured as the tomboyish young girl from a noble family in the hit series, which is attracting tourists from across the globe to the north.

The HBO fantasy TV series has become such a hit that the Northern Ireland Screen company estimates the benefit to the north's economy at around £110 million.

Around 900 full-time and 570 part-time jobs have been created in companies providing services during production.

Visitors have flocked to filming locations, including Ballintoy Harbour in Co Antrim and Castle Ward in Co Down, to get their photos on the same hallowed ground as their stars.

Kit Harrington, who plays Jon Snow, has been photographed out and about in Belfast, months after describing the city as "wonderful for two or three days."

He said: "They have a wonderful tourist board, they celebrate three things. Having the most bombed hotel in Europe, which is great."

Mr Harrington added: "They built the Titanic which is a ship that sunk on its maiden voyage and now they have Game of Thrones, the most depressing TV show in history."

The sixth season of the show is expected on TV screens next year.
