THE family of a Co Down GAA player killed in a freak accident in Qatar are to fly out to the country to bring his body back home.

Relatives of Eamonn Morgan are due to make the agonising trip to Qatar tomorrow and hope to have his remains back home near Newry on Sunday.

The 24-year-old and his girlfriend Charlotte Sant from Manchester died after the dune buggy they were travelling in crashed in the desert just outside Doha on Saturday.

Members of the Qatar GAA club, where the couple were players, have been taking turns to sit with their bodies in the morgue, while their families make their way there.

Mr Morgan had completed his first year teaching in Qatar's Compass International School, where he was head of primary PE. He was also a football coach for Evolution Sports in Doha.

In a tribute to the young sportsman, who played for St John Bosco GAC in Newry since the age of eight, the school principal spoke of his sadness.

Graham Horton said Mr Morgan was "an excellent teacher and a warm and friendly young man" who was "well-loved and well respected by his colleagues and the pupils he taught".

Mr Horton said the GAA fanatic put in extra time outside school hours and encouraged youngsters to take up a variety of sports including football, sailing and golf.

Compass International School are to hold a remembrance assembly in September to look back on Morgan's "brief but memorable time" with the school.
