Woman (22) given probation for abusing schoolgirl
A woman who admitted sexually molesting a schoolgirl walked free from court yesterday after she agreed to spend a year on probation.
Freeing 22-year-old Danielle Millar, Judge Desmond Marrinan described it as a "difficult case" but one where "justice should be tempered with mercy".
Millar, from Church Street in Ahoghill, pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual activity involving penetration with a child under 16 between January and July 2012, with a third count not proceeded with.
Her victim was just 14 when she engaged in inappropriate touching on two occasions in the girl's bedroom.
Judge Marrinan told Antrim Crown Court it was clear from reports that Millar had endured a very unhappy and physically abusive childhood.
"I am not dealing with some cynical criminal who has behaved in a ruthless way to take advantage on a young person," he said, adding that Millar had made "Herculean efforts" to get her life back on track.
She was also ordered to stay on the police sex offenders register for five years and barred from having unsupervised contact with children, using social media or chat rooms to contact children and from beginning an intimate relationship with anyone who has children.
