Among its new trailers at Gamescom, Nintendo announced a very different service for its Switch console – a digital comic app.
InkyPen will go live on the Nintendo eShop as a new way for Switch users to read as many digital comic books and graphic novels as they wish for a monthly subscription fee.
According to Nintendo, popular series such as Sonic The Hedgehog, Judge Dredd, and Transformers will be among those available on the service at launch, with more to be added.
The price for UK users has not been confirmed by InkyPen, but the firm’s website does list pricing as 7.99 in dollars, euro or “local equivalent”.
The subscription firm says over 10,000 comics and novels will be available on the service when it launches, and title will be viewable in both the Switch’s handheld mode and on the TV when in its console dock.
IDW, Dynamite and Valiant are among the publishers already confirmed as appearing on the service.
InkyPen chief executive Ronan Huggard said a key aim of the service was to offer affordability to fans.
“We have no intention of selling content piecemeal, there are other places for that. We’re bringing an all-you-can-read model to the international community,” he said.
“I could never afford to truly explore comics growing up, or even at university. Not because I didn’t have enough money, but because they were just too expensive for a student to justify buying. InkyPen solves this.”
When the app does go live in November, it will be the first non-gaming experience to be available on the Switch’s Nintendo eShop.
