Xbox has rowed back on suggestions it will have new hardware to show off at Gamescom after an executive hinted it was planning an announcement.

A blog post by Larry Hryb, director of programming for Xbox Live, said the gaming giant would have “all-new Xbox hardware” to show off at the Gamescom trade show in Germany at the end of August.

When this was widely reported, the blog post was quietly changed to remove references to hardware.

Mr Hryb eventually admitted he had made a mistake in response to a journalist, but said the company’s own news post was correct.

“This was an error on my side. I corrected my blog post & noted that it has been updated in the title and the body,” he wrote on Twitter.

“Xbox Wire had it accurate. To be clear, we’ve got bundle and accessory news at Gamescom.”

The initial mention of hardware had sparked rumours the company was planning to either preview the next Xbox console or unveil a new version of its high-end, customisable Elite controller.

Those rumours have now been firmly put to bed, with Mr Hryb confirming new Xbox bundles and accessories will be the main takeaway from the show.

However, the gaming firm has also confirmed it will have 25 games playable at its booth – including many that will be on show in Europe for the first time, such as racing game Forza Horizon 4, which is set in Britain.
