To much fanfare and a wave of expectation, the latest trailer for wild west adventure game Red Dead Redemption 2 has been released by developer Rockstar Games.

The studio also behind the Grand Theft Auto series dropped the third teaser for the upcoming game on Wednesday afternoon, offering a glimpse of the setting for the prequel to 2010’s critically acclaimed Red Dead Redemption.

As well as the trailer, Rockstar has confirmed the game is set in 1899, 12 years before events of the previous Red Dead.

The full synopsis of the game reads: “The end of the wild west era has begun as lawmen hunt down the last remaining outlaw gangs. Those who will not surrender or succumb are killed.

“After a robbery goes badly wrong in the western town of Blackwater, Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang are forced to flee. With federal agents and the best bounty hunters in the nation massing on their heels, the gang must rob, steal and fight their way across the rugged heartland of America in order to survive. As deepening internal divisions threaten to tear the gang apart, Arthur must make a choice between his own ideals and loyalty to the gang who raised him.”

However, despite all the new information and a glimpse of previous game protagonist John Marston, reaction to the trailer was decidedly mixed.

With the game not due to launch until October there is plenty of time for Rockstar to show off gameplay in Redemption 2, but many won’t be truly satisfied until they can play the latest instalment in the popular series for themselves.
