VOLKSWAGEN has a rich tradition of performance cars, exemplified by the long-running Golf GTI line, writes William Scholes.

Rethinking that formula for the new electric era brings us to this car, the ID4 GTX.

A sporty family SUV may not exactly get enthusiasts' pulses racing in the way something cast in the classic hot hatch mould might, but the reality is that something like the ID4 is what the market demands these days.

While regular ID4 models are single-motor, rear-wheel-drive affairs, the GTX gets a twin-motor, all-wheel-drive set-up.

This gives the hot ID4 295bhp - putting it between the Golf GTI and Golf R - but no torque figures have been released yet.

Anyone expecting Tesla Model 3 Performance-baiting performance will be disappointed.

The GTX does the 0-62mph sprint in a brisk but not neck-snapping 6.2 seconds, though VW points out it does 0-38mph in 3.2 seconds; top speed is pegged at 112mph.

The car uses the 77kWh battery from the standard car and is said to be capable of just shy of 300 miles on a full charge.

There are numerous cosmetic upgrades - sports seats, red trim and so on. A 'sports package' option lowers the suspension by 15mm and other upgrades include adaptive dampers and 'progressive' steering.

No Northern Ireland prices have been announced yet but in Germany the GTX is priced from €50,415 but given how the rest of the ID4 line-up is positioned, expect it to be at least that in pounds and pence.
