MCLAREN churns out new models like no other supercar maker, but this one is a little different.

Despite the same-again styling, this is an all-new car and essentially signals the start of a new generation of cars from the English company.

Called the Artura - a name, rather than the previous set of three numbers is new territory for a 'mainstream' McLaren - it's a plug-in hybrid.

Out goes the twin-turbo V8 that has served the company in recent years for a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6, aided by a single electric motor for a combined output of a-not-too-shabby 671bhp.

Top speed is 205mph and the 0-62mph sprint is dealt with in three seconds.

The electric motor, meanwhile, helps to make the Artura respond even more energetically to throttle inputs.

The electric motor is powered by a 7.4kWh battery that gives an electric-only range of about 19 miles.

McLaren says it can be charged from flat to 80 per cent capacity in 2.5 hours from a home wallbox.

The hybrid components weigh just 130kg, with the total weight said to be 1,395kg. McLaren's trademark carbonfibre architecture helps keep the overall weight down.

Unusually, the Artura retains hydraulic assistance for the steering - almost everyone else uses electronic assistance, which is generally regarded as not providing the same level of driver feel.

As you would expect, the interior is updated from the outgoing models.

The Artura can be ordered now, with prices starting at £185,500.
