CAR safety watchdog Euro NCap has released its latest batch of crash test data.

The Audi A3 Sportback, Seat Leon, Isuzu D-Max, Kia Sorento and Land Rover Defender all received the maximum five-star rating.

The Audi and Seat both get a central airbag to improve results in side impact protection tests.

Both cars are based on the same platform as the Volkswagen Golf, and all perform similarly. Euro NCap did, however, praise the Leon for achieving a score of 92 per cent for 'adult occupant protection'.

The Isuzu D-Max pick-up was highly commended for getting top marks despite "competing in a segment that is not famous for highlighting safety".

The crew cab model gets automatic emergency braking and a new centre airbag.

However, its weak point was the fact that its weight and front structure made it more 'aggressive' to other vehicles in a collision, something that was also noted about the Land Rover Defender.

The new Kia Sorento didn't perform well in frontal offset crash section of the test but its extensive range of driver assistance systems meant it still achieved a five-star rating.

The electric Honda e just missed out on top marks, scoring four out of five, losing a star because - surprisingly, perhaps - it doesn't have some of the more advanced safety features.

Meanwhile, the Hyundai i10 scored three stars, losing points because the driver's pelvis slipped under the lap belt in the full-width frontal impact test.

Euro NCap secretary general Michiel van Ratingen said that "poor crash compatibility between vehicles" has been a problem for years.

"Now we have a frontal test which can assess how a vehicle performs in this regard and can penalise those cars that perform poorly," he said.

"This is a first for safety assessment and should lead to better, more compatible designs in the future."

Euro NCap also evaluated three new hybrid and electric variants of cars tested in earlier years.

The Renault Captur's five-star rating from last year now also covers the new E-Tech plug-in hybrid version.

Peugeot's 3008 SUV Hybrid, 508 Hybrid and electrified 208 join the 2016, 2018 and 2019 ratings respectively.
