SAFETY watchdog Euro Ncap has put the electric Mazda MX-30 and hybrid Honda Jazz through its crash tests.

Both secured the organisation's maximum five-star rating.

The MX-30 is Mazda's first EV. It's based on the company's CX-30 SUV - in turn based on the Mazda 3 - so performed similarly well in the crash test procedures.

It delivered an impressive 91 per cent score in the adult occupant protection part of the test, thanks to its compatible front-end structure and new far-side restraints.

Euro Ncap said it was disappointed with the MX-30's vulnerable road users' collision avoidance capabilities, saying it had "mediocre test performance" and was "lacking more advanced functionalities, such as turn-across-path intervention".

The Honda Jazz, meanwhile, is now sold only as a hybrid.

The latest model is also equipped with up-to-date safety equipment, including autonomous emergency braking and an all-new centre-mounted airbag that protects driver and front passenger against injuries in far-side crashes.

Euro Ncap secretary-general, Michiel van Ratingen, said both manufacturers were to be congratulated "for their commitment to safety and for achieving five-star ratings for their cars".

"The ratings released to date demonstrate that Euro Ncap's new 2020 protocols are having a tangible impact on the safety equipment and crash performance of car models in Europe, including the latest electrified vehicles," he said.

"Industry's response to consumer ratings remains one the most important drivers for vehicle safety innovation, to the benefit of all road users in Europe."

While the MX-30 and Jazz were subjected to the 2020 test - the toughest yet - Euro Ncap has given BMW's new 2 Series Gran Coupe a 2019 rating because it is based on the 1 Series hatchback that was tested last year.
