WE brought you news last month about the newly-established Newry and Mourne Road Safety Committee, and the group has been quick to get its first initiative on the road.

It is encouraging primary schools in the Newry and Mourne area to take part in the Northern Ireland Road Safety Quiz by entering teams in the local heat of the competition, which will be held from 10am to 11.30am on March 1 2016 in the Canal Court Hotel, Newry.

Hosting the event is the first of a series of campaigns the Newry and Mourne group is planning to run to promote road safety awareness, particularly with vulnerable road users like primary school children.

The table quiz covers both general knowledge and road safety questions, with prizes and certificates on offer. Each school can send one or two teams of four pupils from Primary 6 or 7 classes.

The two top teams in the Newry and Mourne area will progress to the Northern Ireland finals, which will take place at the NI Fire and Rescue Training Centre in Belfast on Monday March 14. The finals are being organised by the Road Safety Council of Northern Ireland.

Tony McKeown from event sponsors CRASH Services said: "As a local business we are delighted to be able to support the primary school quiz.

"We are involved in both accident management and breakdown recovery services so we have a close connection with road users and we are pleased to get involved with road safety projects like this.

"Indeed we recently helped to organise the NI Road Safety awards and this highlighted the need for continuing to help primary school children be more aware of the dangers on the roads."
